Off The Grid

The last six days have been both relaxing and stressful. We have stayed in three different locations on the country side of Mongolia.

Our first stop was Hustai National park. We stayed in log cabins for two nights. This was the roughest in terms of amenities. The toilet was up a hill from our cabins and the showers had minimal water and were outdoors. This place was also my favorite we were able to truly disconnect and really enjoy nature. The park was beautiful. Being able to really see stars for once was beyond amazing. It was nothing like you could ever see at home. There was no other people for miles and miles so the stars were so clear. Our group laid out on blankets and watched the stars for hours. We were able to see many constellations and the Milky Way.

Our second stop was in Harhorin at a luxurious ger camp. This camp seemed the opposite of the state park. We had electricity, hot showers and flushing toilets. During our stay here we were able to see a Monastery and a museum.

Harhorin has an amazing history. It was the original capital of Mongolia about 1500 years ago. It is so interesting to compare this to our history back in the states. Compared to Mongolia and many other countries in Asia we are a pretty young country. By going through the Museum we were able to see a small snapshot of what life would have been like 1500 years ago and compare that to the culture we are seeing in Mongolia today.

Our final stop was at Ogii Lake is beautiful and huge. It is known around the world to be one of the best fishing spots. Unfortunately we did not get to fish. This camp was in between the other two based on amenities. The one thing that I did not like about the lake was that it is seen as sacred water which means that women are not allowed in the lake.

Throughout our trek to the steppe we have played and learned lots of card games and laughed more than I could have imagined. Now we are on our way back to the city where we will end our trip. We have one full day left in Mongolia. I am feeling both sadness and relief. I am going to miss this place and will for sure come back. However, I am also feeling ready to be in my own place with my own things and eat my own food.
